SODIUM XYLENESULFONATE
Sodium xylenesulfonate (CAS 1300-72-7) is an anionic hydrotrope produced by sulfonating xylene and neutralising the resulting sulfonic acid with sodium hydroxide. It is normally traded as a colourless to pale yellow aqueous solution containing about 40 percent active matter, although a spray-dried solid grade is also available for powder formulations. Unlike a conventional surfactant it possesses only a short hydrophobic xylene core and a strongly hydrophilic sulfonate head, so it does not form micelles at low concentration but instead greatly increases the water solubility of other organic species and reduces the cloud point of nonionic systems. This solubilising power, combined with thermal and hydrolytic stability over a wide pH range and ready biodegradability, makes it a workhorse additive in liquid detergent, personal care and industrial processing products.
1. Detergent and cleaning formulations: acts as a solubiliser, coupling agent and cloud point depressant that keeps surfactants, fragrances, dyes and builders in a single clear liquid phase in dish liquids, laundry concentrates, hard surface cleaners, bathroom cleaners and industrial degreasers.
2. Personal care: used in shampoos, liquid soaps, bath products, facial cleansers and shaving preparations to reduce viscosity, clarify surfactant concentrates, boost foaming and improve product stability without adding irritation potential.
3. Industrial processing: applied in textile printing pastes, dye bath levelling agents, agrochemical emulsifiable concentrates, drilling fluids, emulsion polymerisation, metal cleaning and pulp and paper processing as a wetting and dispersing aid.
4. Formulation benefits and storage: effective at low addition levels, usually one to ten percent active matter, stable across a broad pH range and low foaming; keep containers closed and store above the freezing point to prevent crystallisation, away from strong oxidising agents and acids that would liberate the sulfonic acid.
