Aminoacetonitrile bisulfate
Aminoacetonitrile bisulfate (CAS 151-63-3), also described as aminoacetonitrile hydrogen sulfate, sulfuric acid compound with 2-aminoacetonitrile or aminoacetonitrile sulfate, is the sulfuric acid salt of the simplest alpha-aminonitrile. The free nitrile is a low-boiling, strongly basic and hazardous liquid that is awkward to store and dose, so the material is supplied as the stable, water-soluble crystalline bisulfate of 98 percent purity that releases the nitrile on neutralisation. It is a small, densely functionalised molecule containing both a nitrile and a primary amine, which makes it a versatile two-carbon nucleophilic and electrophilic building block for heterocyclic chemistry. It is also a metabolite of several nitrile-containing compounds and an intermediate in the industrial synthesis of amino acids and chelating agents.
1. Pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis: used to prepare aminomethyl-substituted heterocycles, imidazolines, aminonitriles, thiazoles, triazines and other drug or crop-protection intermediates where a compact C2 nitrogen building block is required.
2. Chelating agent chemistry: a precursor to glycine-type, iminodiacetic and aminomethylphosphonate ligands used in water treatment, scale and corrosion inhibition, metal sequestration, micronutrient chelates and chelation therapy research.
3. Nitrile transformations: the nitrile group can be hydrolysed to an amide or carboxylic acid, reduced to an amine, or cyclised into amidines and tetrazoles, giving broad and flexible access to nitrogen-containing products.
4. Handling and safety: acidic and moisture sensitive, harmful if ingested or inhaled and irritating to skin and eyes. Store sealed in a dry, cool place away from alkalis, oxidisers and acids, avoid dust formation, use local ventilation and follow local regulations governing nitrile-containing waste.
