This compound (CAS 160969-00-6), also named 2-[2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)phenoxy]ethyl bromide or 1-(2-bromoethoxy)-2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)benzene, is a colourless transparent liquid aryl alkyl bromide with a density of about 1.5 grams per cubic centimetre and a purity of 98 percent or higher. As the name implies it contains both a trifluoroethoxy-substituted aromatic ring and a reactive 2-bromoethyl ether chain, and it is soluble in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethylformamide. The primary alkyl bromide is an efficient electrophile that is readily displaced by amines, azides, thiols, alkoxides and carboxylates, allowing the trifluoroethoxyphenoxyethyl fragment to be appended to a wide range of scaffolds by straightforward nucleophilic substitution under mild conditions.
