Disodium 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonate
Disodium 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonate (CAS 1655-29-4) is a water-soluble naphthalene disulfonic acid salt in which the two sulfonate groups occupy positions 1 and 5, giving a linear, symmetric and rigid anionic scaffold. It is a white to off-white crystalline solid, freely soluble in water and sparingly soluble in organic solvents, and it is thermally stable under ordinary conditions. The high charge density combined with the planar aromatic core allows the dianion to act as a hydrotrope, dispersant and host for crystalline inclusion complexes, and its strong chromophore and ease of further functionalisation make it a convenient starting material for dyes, whitening agents and coordination materials.
1. Dye and whitening agent intermediate: a starting material for azo and stilbene dyes and for optical brighteners used in textiles, paper, detergents and plastics, where the two sulfonates contribute solubility and affinity for cellulose and polyamide fibres.
2. Supramolecular and materials chemistry: the rigid dianion is used to build host-guest complexes, crystalline inclusion compounds, layered organo-inorganic materials and coordination frameworks studied for sensing, ion exchange and gas storage.
3. Analytical and photographic applications: employed as a reagent and additive in photographic chemistry and as a reference standard for sulfonated aromatic compounds in chromatographic method development, validation and quality control.
4. Handling and storage: hygroscopic and irritating to eyes and respiratory tract; store sealed and dry in a cool, well-ventilated place, avoid dust generation, and dispose of residues in accordance with local regulations governing sulfonate-containing industrial waste water.
