1,2-Bis-4-vinylbenzene
1,2-Bis(1-ethoxyethoxy)-4-vinylbenzene (CAS 186768-92-3) is a dialkoxy-protected styrene monomer in which both hydroxyl groups of the catechol-like 3,4-dihydroxystyrene unit are masked as ethoxyethyl acetals while the vinyl group remains free for polymerisation. It is a colourless to pale liquid supplied at 98 percent purity for research and industrial manufacturing use, and it is normally stabilised against spontaneous radical polymerisation and stored cool, dry and away from light and acids. The acetal groups provide solubility and stability during polymerisation and are subsequently cleaved by mild acid to liberate the catechol functionality, so the monomer behaves as a latent, highly polar dihydroxystyrene building block in advanced polymer design.
1. Photoresist and electronics materials: a monomer for chemically amplified resists and for polymers requiring acid-triggered solubility switching in semiconductor lithography and microelectronics patterning.
2. Functional polymer synthesis: provides poly(dihydroxystyrene) and catechol-containing copolymers for adhesives, coatings, membranes, ion-exchange resins, dispersants and metal-binding materials with tunable polarity.
3. Biomimetic and materials chemistry: the catechol group released on deprotection strongly binds metal and metal oxide surfaces, enabling bioinspired adhesion, redox-active films, antioxidant polymers and surface anchoring chemistry.
4. Handling and storage: flammable and prone to polymerisation; keep refrigerated under inert gas with inhibitor present away from acid, oxidising agents, heat and light, and cleave the acetal only under controlled acidic conditions with adequate ventilation and temperature control.
