Pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate (CAS 24057-28-1), universally abbreviated PPTS, is the colourless to white crystalline salt formed from pyridine and p-toluenesulfonic acid, supplied as a white to almost white powder or crystal with an assay of 98 percent or higher. It is a non-hygroscopic, easy-to-weigh solid that is soluble in water and polar organic solvents and is thermally stable under ordinary conditions. It is a far more convenient acid reagent than the free sulfonic acid because it is non-volatile, low odour and only mildly acidic. As a buffered acid it catalyses a wide range of transformations while suppressing the side reactions, dehydration and charring caused by strong mineral acids such as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, and it has become a standard reagent in synthetic, process and pharmaceutical chemistry laboratories worldwide.

1. Acid catalyst: widely used to catalyse acetal and ketal formation and hydrolysis, tetrahydropyranyl and silyl ether cleavage, esterification, transesterification, epoxide opening, rearrangement, glycosylation and oxidation reactions.
2. Protecting-group chemistry: the reagent of choice for mild, selective deprotection of acetals, ketals, THP ethers and tert-butyldimethylsilyl ethers in complex natural product, carbohydrate and pharmaceutical synthesis where harsh acid would damage sensitive functionality.
3. Phase-transfer and other applications: acts as a phase-transfer catalyst and mild acid in polymerisation, condensation and hydrolysis reactions, and as a buffer in aqueous organic media and in analytical sample preparation.
4. Handling and storage: irritating to skin, eyes and respiratory tract; store in a tightly closed container in a dry place, avoid dust generation and use gloves and eye protection. It is non-flammable and considerably easier and safer to handle and measure than p-toluenesulfonic acid.
