Oleamidopropyl betaine
Oleamidopropyl betaine (CAS 25054-76-6) is an amphoteric surfactant derived from oleic acid in which the fatty amide chain is linked through a propyl spacer to a betaine head group, a quaternary ammonium carboxylate. It is normally supplied as a pale yellow to amber aqueous solution containing 30 to 40 percent active matter and is compatible with anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants across a wide pH range. The zwitterionic head group makes the molecule mild to skin and eyes and provides foam boosting, viscosity building, conditioning and antistatic effects, while the long unsaturated C18 chain supplies emulsifying, wetting and dispersing power. It is readily biodegradable, which suits it to consumer and industrial formulations alike.
1. Personal care: used in shampoos, body washes, liquid soaps, facial cleansers, shaving products and baby care items as a mild secondary surfactant, foam booster, viscosity builder and mildness enhancer that reduces the irritation potential of anionic surfactants.
2. Conditioning and skin feel: improves wet and dry combability, reduces static and leaves a soft, conditioned after-feel on skin and hair, so it is a common component of conditioning shampoos and body-care products.
3. Household and industrial cleaning: acts as a thickener, wetting agent and antistatic agent in hard-surface cleaners, and as an emulsifier and corrosion-inhibiting additive in textile, metal-treatment and industrial formulations.
4. Handling and storage: keep containers closed and protected from freezing and prolonged heat, since amidopropyl betaines can hydrolyse or accumulate amidoamine under extreme conditions; the product is readily biodegradable and generally mild but may be irritating at high concentration.
