Synonym(s):Iridium Tetraiodide; IrI4; Iridium(IV) iodide

Iridium(IV) iodide is an inorganic iridium salt with the formula IrI4, supplied as a black crystalline powder at 99% purity.

It is a refractory, air- and moisture-sensitive halide that decomposes on heating rather than melting cleanly, and it is handled as a precursor rather than a finished functional material. In the laboratory it serves as a convenient source of well-defined iridium for the preparation of homogeneous catalysts, iodide-bridged coordination compounds and doped inorganic films.

Because of its high iridium content, the material is normally supplied in small sealed units under inert atmosphere and stored away from moisture, oxidants and strong light.

• Catalyst synthesis: a starting material for iridium complexes, including phosphine- and cyclometalated iridium species used in homogeneous catalysis and photoredox chemistry.

• Inorganic and materials research: used to prepare iodide-doped films, mixed-metal halides and iridium-containing solid-state compounds by vapour or solution routes.

• Precursor for high-purity iridium: converted into iridium metal or other iridium salts through controlled thermal or chemical reduction.

• Reference and analytical work: applied where a defined iridium(IV) iodide stoichiometry is needed for calibration, speciation studies or ligand-exchange experiments.
