Butylferrocene
Butylferrocene is an iron sandwich compound in which one cyclopentadienyl ring carries an n-butyl substituent, supplied as an orange to brown clear liquid at 98% purity.
The ferrocene core provides a reversible one-electron redox couple, thermal stability and a lipophilic, low-toxicity organometallic skeleton, while the butyl chain improves solubility in hydrocarbons and polymers. These properties are exploited wherever a liquid, fuel-compatible or polymer-compatible iron source is needed.
The product is sensitive to strong oxidants and should be kept in a closed container, away from heat, sparks and direct sunlight.
• Combustion and propellant catalysis: acts as a burning-rate catalyst and combustion promoter in solid rocket propellants and in fuel additives.
• Antiknock and lubricant additives: used as an iron-based octane improver and as a friction-modifying component in lubricant formulations.
• Polymer and materials chemistry: incorporated as a redox-active ferrocene unit in polyolefins, silicones and electrochemical films, and grafted onto electrodes for sensor construction.
• Organometallic synthesis: a soluble precursor for substituted ferrocenes, ferrocenium salts and metallocene catalysts.
