Nalidixic Acid
Nalidixic Acid (CAS: 389-08-2) is a synthetic quinolone-class antibacterial compound and the first of the quinolone family. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase.
It appears as a white to pale yellow crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in water and soluble in alkaline solutions and some organic solvents.
Today it is used mainly as a pharmaceutical raw material, a reference standard and a selective agent in microbiology, as well as a starting point for structure-activity studies on newer quinolones.
It is supplied as a free acid powder and should be stored tightly closed, protected from light. Typical quality checks include assay by HPLC, loss on drying and related-substance limits, which matter for pharmaceutical and reference-standard applications.
• Pharmaceutical raw material: active ingredient for urinary-tract anti-infective formulations and a building block for related quinolone derivatives. It remains a useful reference for quinolone resistance studies.
• Microbiology selective agent: added to culture media to suppress Gram-negative bacteria when isolating other organisms. This makes it handy in environmental, clinical and food microbiology workflows.
• Reference and research use: analytical standard and tool compound for DNA gyrase and antibiotic-resistance studies. Its stable crystalline form simplifies handling and weighing in analytical work.
• Veterinary and formulation development: used in research formulations and development of antibacterial products where a defined, well-characterised quinolone is needed.
