1-Pentadecanol
1-Pentadecanol (CAS: 629-76-5) is a straight-chain C15 fatty alcohol supplied as a white waxy solid or flakes. It is practically insoluble in water and dissolves in ethanol and oils.
Its long hydrophobic chain gives good emolliency, thickening and consistency-building properties, so it is used in personal care emulsions and as a raw material for esters and surfactants.
Formulators value it for a smooth skin feel, stable emulsions and compatibility with other fatty alcohols and waxes.
The waxy solid melts at a moderate temperature and is easily handled as flakes or after warming. Typical checks include alcohol content, hydroxyl value, acid value and carbon-chain distribution, as these determine skin feel and consistency in finished products.
• Personal care formulations: co-emulsifier, thickener and emollient in creams, lotions and hair-care products. Odd-chain fatty alcohols can give a distinct texture compared with the more common C16 and C18 grades.
• Surfactant and ester intermediate: starting material for sulfates, ethoxylates and fatty esters. The resulting esters and sulfates are valued for mildness and stable foam or lubricity.
• Lubricant and industrial additive: used in specialty lubricants, wax blends and processing aids. It blends easily into waxes and oil phases.
• Waxes, candles and coatings: used as a wax modifier and slip additive to adjust hardness, melting behaviour and surface feel.
