Naphthalene
Naphthalene (CAS: 91-20-3) is the simplest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, supplied as white crystalline flakes or balls with a characteristic odor. It is obtained mainly from coal tar and petroleum.
It is largely consumed as a feedstock for phthalic anhydride and for naphthalene sulfonate derivatives, and is a basic raw material for dyes, resins and agrochemicals.
Buyers look for stable purity, low sulfur and consistent melting point, which support downstream process control.
Naphthalene sublimes readily at modest temperatures and has a strong odor, so it should be stored in closed containers away from heat and ignition sources. Refined grades are specified by crystallising point, sulfur and moisture content.
• Phthalic anhydride and resin production: oxidation feedstock for plasticisers, alkyd and polyester resins. Phthalic anhydride from naphthalene remains an important route in some regions.
• Naphthalene sulfonates: raw material for concrete superplasticisers, dispersants and dye intermediates. Sulfonated condensates give high water-reducing performance in concrete admixtures.
• Dyes, agrochemicals and fumigants: intermediate for naphthols and naphthylamines and used in moth-control products. Use as a household fumigant is restricted in some regions, so local rules should be checked.
• Solvent and tar chemistry: used in carbon materials, tar-based products and as a research chemical for aromatic substitution studies.
