N-Benzyl-N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine
N-Benzyl-N-ethyl-m-toluidine is a tertiary aromatic amine with a benzyl group and an ethyl group on the nitrogen, supplied as a pale yellow to brown clear liquid at 98% purity.
The molecule is fully alkylated, so it carries no reactive N-H bond and behaves as an electron-rich but chemically stable amine that dissolves readily in aromatic solvents and in many polymer systems. This combination of a lipophilic benzyl group, a low-viscosity liquid form and good thermal stability makes it a useful intermediate for colour chemistry and for formulations requiring a non-volatile amine.
The product should be kept in closed, light-resistant containers, away from strong oxidising agents, acids and sources of ignition.
• Leuco dye chemistry: a key coupling component for pressure-sensitive and thermal colour formers, where the benzyl group improves solubility in the dye matrix.
• Triarylmethane and methine dyes: used as an alkylated aniline building block for the synthesis of dyes with improved oil solubility.
• Rubber and polymer additives: an intermediate for amine-type antioxidants and accelerators, and a stabiliser for unsaturated elastomers.
• Fine chemical synthesis: serves as a hindered tertiary amine base and as a substrate for formylation, nitrosation and ring-functionalisation reactions.
