1-Chloroanthraquinone
1-Chloroanthraquinone is an anthraquinone with a single chlorine atom at the 1-position, supplied as a light yellow crystalline powder at 98% purity.
The chlorine sits at an activated position, so it is displaced cleanly by amines, phenols and thiols, turning this inexpensive building block into a wide range of amino-, aryloxy- and thio-substituted anthraquinones. The anthraquinone core itself provides excellent light and heat stability, which carries through to the derived colourants.
The product should be stored in a closed container in a dry, well-ventilated place away from strong oxidising agents and sources of ignition.
• Anthraquinone dye synthesis: the classic starting material for 1-aminoanthraquinone and for a broad family of vat, disperse and solvent dyes.
• Nucleophilic substitution platform: reacts with amines and phenols to give substituted anthraquinones used as colorants and as photosensitisers.
• Pulp and paper chemistry: anthraquinone derivatives from this intermediate serve as cooking additives that improve delignification.
• Intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals: provides the anthraquinone pharmacophore used in laxative and cytotoxic agents.
