1,4-Bis(2-Cyanostyryl)benzene
1,4-Bis(2-cyanostyryl)benzene is a symmetric distyrylbenzene optical brightener with the cyano groups in the ortho position, supplied as a pale yellow crystalline powder at 98% purity.
The ortho arrangement of the cyano groups gives a more twisted, less planar conformation than the para isomer, which raises the melting point, lowers solubility and improves resistance to sublimation. The result is a brightener that performs well in high-temperature polyester processing while delivering a neutral to bluish-white effect.
The compound is essentially insoluble in water and should be stored in a dry, closed container protected from light and heat to avoid loss of fluorescence activity.
• Polyester fibre brightening: used in exhaust dyeing and continuous thermosol ranges for high-whiteness polyester fabrics.
• Plastics whitening: incorporated into polyester, polyamide and engineering plastics processed at elevated temperatures.
• Textile printing and finishing: applied in print pastes and finishing baths to enhance the visual whiteness of synthetic substrates.
• Optical materials research: a reference compound for studying aggregation, excimer formation and fluorescence quantum yield in distyrylbenzene systems.
