Thimerosal
Thimerosal (CAS: 54-64-8) is a white, water-soluble organomercury compound that acts as an antimicrobial preservative at very low use levels. It prevents bacterial and fungal growth in multi-dose aqueous preparations, which is why it has long been used in vaccine and ophthalmic formulations and in laboratory reagent preservation. The product is supplied to pharmacopoeial assay limits, and customers typically work with it in dilute solution because of its high potency. It is light-sensitive and should be stored cool, dry and protected from direct light in sealed containers.
• Preservative for injectables: used at low concentrations to protect multi-dose vaccine and biological preparations.
• Ophthalmic and topical preparations: applied historically as an antimicrobial preservative in eye and skin products.
• Laboratory reagents: prevents microbial growth in antisera, enzyme solutions and diagnostic reagents.
• Antimicrobial research: studied as a sulfhydryl-reactive agent and as a reference preservative standard.
