1,8-Naphthalimide
1,8-Naphthalimide is the cyclic imide formed from 1,8-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and ammonia, supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder at 98% purity.
The planar naphthalimide core is strongly fluorescent, thermally robust and easy to functionalise at the imide nitrogen or at the aromatic ring, which allows its optical properties to be tuned over a wide range. It is therefore both a versatile building block for functional dyes and a convenient intermediate for polyimide-type materials.
The compound is stable under normal conditions but should be stored in a dry, closed container away from strong oxidising agents and strong bases.
• Fluorescent dye synthesis: the core used to prepare naphthalimide fluorophores for sensing, labelling and optical brightening.
• Polymer and resin chemistry: reacted with diamines or converted to naphthalimide monomers for high-temperature polyimides and photostable plastics.
• Organic electronics: an electron-acceptor unit in OLED hosts, n-type semiconductors and photovoltaic materials.
• Agrochemical and pharmaceutical intermediates: a scaffold for biologically active naphthalimide derivatives, including DNA-interacting compounds.
