2-Naphthol (CAS: 135-19-3) is a naphthalene derivative with a hydroxyl group at the 2-position, supplied as white to pale yellow flakes or powder with a faint phenolic odor.

It dissolves in alkali, alcohol and ether and is a basic raw material for azo pigments, dyes, antioxidants and pharmaceuticals.

Reliable colour, assay and low 1-naphthol content are the main specification points for pigment producers.

It darkens on exposure to light and air, so it should be stored in sealed, opaque containers. Buyers check assay, melting point, moisture and 1-naphthol, which affects pigment shade.

• Azo pigments and dyes: coupling component for Pigment Red types and many solvent and acid dyes. Strong coupling at the 1-position gives bright reds, oranges and yellows.

• Rubber antioxidants: intermediate for antioxidant D and related products. These products extend the life of rubber and plastic parts.

• Pharmaceutical and fine chemicals: precursor to naphthol derivatives and analytical reagents. It also supplies intermediates for UV absorbers and drug synthesis.

• Analytical and laboratory reagents: used in analytical tests such as the Libermann and Voges-Proskauer-related reactions and for producing organic reagents.
