Acenaphthene
Acenaphthene (CAS: 83-32-9) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in which an ethylene bridge links the 1 and 8 positions of naphthalene. It is supplied as white to pale yellow crystals.
It is isolated from coal tar and is a raw material for dyes, pigments, plastics and agrochemicals.
Buyers specify high purity and low colour because it is converted to acenaphthylene and naphthalic anhydride.
It is a stable solid, stored in a closed container away from strong oxidisers. Typical checks include assay by GC, melting point and low acenaphthylene or naphthalene content.
• Dye and pigment intermediate: oxidised to 1,8-naphthalic anhydride for vat dyes and fluorescent dyes. The anhydride is the base for many fluorescent and vat colorants.
• Polymer and plastics raw material: dehydrogenated to acenaphthylene for specialty polymers. These polymers offer good heat resistance and electrical properties.
• Agrochemical and research use: building block for insecticide and fungicide intermediates. Its derivatives are also explored in organic electronics.
• Research and electronic materials: used as a model PAH and as a precursor for ligands and organic electronic compounds.
