Betaine citrate (CAS 17671-50-0), also called trimethylglycine citrate or the citric acid salt of the quaternary ammonium zwitterion betaine, is a white to off-white crystalline, highly water-soluble powder with a mildly acidic and pleasant taste and good stability under normal storage conditions. It combines two complementary functions: betaine is a natural osmolyte and methyl-group donor that supports hepatic methylation, homocysteine metabolism and cellular volume regulation, while citric acid contributes buffering capacity, metal chelation and a central role in energy metabolism as a tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediate. Both ions are naturally occurring and well tolerated, so the salt is used mainly as a nutritional, cosmetic and food-grade ingredient rather than as an industrial chemical, and it is supplied at 95 percent purity for research use.

1. Nutritional supplements: marketed as a bioavailable betaine source to support liver function, homocysteine balance, muscle performance and power output, hydration, digestive comfort and cardiovascular health, alone or in combination with other nutraceuticals and amino acids such as glycine.
2. Beverage and food applications: used as a mild acidulant, pH buffer, flavour modulator and mineral chelator in functional drinks, sports nutrition powders, energy gels and dietary formulations, where it also masks the bitterness of other actives.
3. Cosmetics and personal care: included in skin-care, anti-ageing, moisturising and cleansing formulas as a humectant, buffering agent and skin-conditioning additive that improves product feel, tolerance and stability.
4. Research and other uses: studied in anticancer, metabolic syndrome, hepatic steatosis and industrial fermentation applications as a methyl donor or osmoprotectant. Handle as a fine, mildly acidic, hygroscopic powder; keep containers sealed and dry and avoid inhalation of dust.
