Bromoacetic Acid
Bromoacetic Acid (CAS: 79-08-3) is a halogenated carboxylic acid supplied as a white to off-white crystalline solid.
The bromine alpha to the carboxyl group is highly reactive, so the compound is used for carboxymethylation of amines, thiols and phenols and for building substituted acetic acid frameworks; it is also a classic intermediate for thioglycolic acid.
Commercial assay is 99% with low free bromine, and the product is very hygroscopic and corrosive, packed in sealed drums.
• Thioglycolic acid production: reacted with thiourea or sulfide to give the mercapto acid.
• Pharmaceuticals: a carboxymethylating agent for building substituted acetic acid pharmacophores.
• Agrochemicals and herbicides: an intermediate for chloroacetamide and phenoxy acid actives.
• Industrial intermediates: used in the manufacture of CMC-type derivatives and chelating agents.
