Chenodeoxycholic acid (CAS 474-25-9) is a primary bile acid synthesized in the liver from cholesterol. It is a white to off-white powder that is sparingly soluble in water.
Clinically, it is used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones and to treat cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. It is also a key starting material for ursodeoxycholic acid synthesis.
