Chloromethyl triethoxysilane
Chloromethyl triethoxysilane (CAS 15267-95-5), sometimes listed as chloromethyltriethoxysilane, is a colourless to slightly pale-yellow liquid that is only slightly soluble in combustible solvents and is described as flammable and corrosive, forming a colourless to pale mobile liquid with a pungent odour. It carries three hydrolytically active ethoxy groups plus a reactive chloromethyl substituent, so it must be kept dry under inert atmosphere and handled with explosion-proof electrical and ventilation equipment. In the presence of water the ethoxy groups hydrolyse to silanols that condense with hydroxylated surfaces and with each other to form crosslinked siloxane networks, while the chloromethyl group remains available for nucleophilic substitution, radical addition and metal-mediated coupling. The result is a versatile reagent for surface engineering and for building functional silicone-based materials.
1. Silane coupling agent: improves adhesion of organic resins to inorganic surfaces such as glass, silica, fillers and metals in composites, coatings, sealants, adhesives and moulding compounds, and assists filler dispersion.
2. Synthetic intermediate: a key starting material for preparing other organofunctional silanes, silane-based polymers, silicone resins and silsesquioxane materials with tailored chlorine or alkoxy functionality for coatings and electronics.
3. Surface modification and grafting: introduces chloromethyl anchors on silica and metal oxide surfaces that can be reacted with amines, thiols, phosphines or carboxylates for chromatographic stationary phases, immobilised catalysts and chemical sensors.
4. Handling and storage: flammable, corrosive and moisture sensitive and supplied at 98 percent purity; keep in the dark, sealed and dry at two to eight degrees Celsius, work under inert gas with explosion-proof electrical equipment, and smother spills with dry sand or dry chemical rather than water.
