Chromium(III) Chloride (CAS: 10025-73-7) is the anhydrous form of chromium trichloride, a violet to dark green crystalline solid. It is an important industrial and laboratory chromium source: it works as a mild Lewis acid catalyst, as a precursor for organochromium reagents such as Nozaki–Hiyama reagents, and as the active component in chromium electroplating and surface-treatment baths. It is also used to prepare other chromium compounds, chromium-based pigments and catalyst systems. The anhydrous grade is strongly hygroscopic and must be kept sealed and dry so that the assay remains stable during storage and handling.

• Organic synthesis catalysis: a Lewis acid for Friedel–Crafts reactions, oligomerisation and carbonyl activation.

• Organometallic and pharmaceutical chemistry: a precursor for chromium reagents and for chromium-mediated C–C bond formation.

• Metal finishing: used in chromium electroplating, passivation and surface-treatment formulations.

• Inorganic and pigment intermediates: a starting material for other chromium salts, oxides and colour pigments.
