Ciclopirox olamine is the ethanolamine salt of ciclopirox, a hydroxypyridinone antifungal, supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder at 99% purity.

The salt form greatly improves water solubility compared with the free acid, so the active can be formulated into creams, lotions, gels and shampoos, while the hydroxypyridinone ring chelates polyvalent cations such as iron and aluminium in fungal cells. That chelation-based mechanism is the reason the molecule retains activity against organisms that are resistant to other antifungal classes.

The material should be stored in a tightly closed container, protected from light and moisture, and handled under conditions appropriate for an active pharmaceutical ingredient.

• Antifungal formulations: the active ingredient in topical preparations for dermatophytoses, candidiasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis.

• Medicated shampoo and cleanser: used in anti-dandruff and scalp-care products at 1-1.5% active concentration.

• Pharmaceutical manufacturing: supplied as a salt for tablets, creams and nail lacquers, and used as a reference standard in assay and stability testing.

• Antimicrobial research: applied as a metal-chelating model compound in studies of fungal and bacterial iron metabolism.
