Dicyclohexylphosphine
Dicyclohexylphosphine is a secondary organophosphine carrying two cyclohexyl substituents and one P-H bond, supplied as a colourless to pale yellow clear liquid at 98% purity.
The bulky, electron-rich cyclohexyl groups make it a strong σ-donor ligand, and the reactive P-H bond allows it to be converted into phosphine oxides, sulfides, phosphonium salts and metal-phosphido complexes. It is also used as a building block for the larger di- and triphosphine ligands employed in homogeneous catalysis.
The liquid is air-sensitive, has an unpleasant characteristic phosphine odour, and must be stored under nitrogen in a cool, dry location away from oxidising agents and acids.
• Ligand synthesis: a precursor to bulky cyclohexylphosphine ligands, including bidentate and chiral phosphines used in cross-coupling and hydrogenation.
• Metal complex preparation: coordinates to palladium, nickel, rhodium and ruthenium to give catalysts for amination, hydroformylation and hydrosilylation.
• Organophosphorus intermediates: the P-H bond is used to build phosphine oxides, phosphonium salts and phosphido-bridged clusters.
• Radical and polymer chemistry: applied as a phosphine donor and radical mediator in controlled polymerisation and in the modification of phosphine-functionalised supports.
