Diethoxydiphenylsilane
Diethoxydiphenylsilane (CAS 2553-19-7), also named diphenyldiethoxysilane, is a colourless to almost colourless clear liquid in which a phenyl-rich silicon centre bears two hydrolytically active ethoxy groups, supplied at 98 percent purity or higher by gas chromatography. It is moisture sensitive and hydrolyses in the presence of water to give diphenylsilanediol and crosslinked diphenylsiloxane condensation products, so it is stored sealed under an inert atmosphere. The two phenyl substituents confer high thermal stability, hydrophobicity and a high refractive index on the resulting silicones, while the ethoxy groups allow controlled hydrolysis and condensation with silanol-terminated polysiloxanes and hydroxylated surfaces. It is a reactive silane intermediate for phenyl silicone chemistry and for specialty coating and catalytic applications.
1. Silicone polymer synthesis: a reactive intermediate for preparing diphenylsiloxane and methylphenylsiloxane polymers, resins and fluids used where high temperature resistance, low flammability and optical clarity are required.
2. Polymerisation catalysis: used as an external electron donor and selectivity control agent in Ziegler-Natta catalysts for polypropylene and other polyolefin production, where it influences stereoregularity and catalyst activity.
3. Analytical and materials applications: applied to prepare solid-phase microextraction fibre coatings for extracting trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and as a crosslinker and coupling agent in hybrid coatings, sealants and electronic encapsulants.
4. Handling and storage: flammable, moisture sensitive and irritating; keep sealed under dry inert gas in a cool, well-ventilated place away from water, acids, bases and oxidising agents, and use suitable protective equipment during handling.
