Dimercaprol
Dimercaprol (CAS: 59-52-9) is a colourless to pale yellow oily liquid with a strong mercaptan odour, built around a two-carbon chain carrying two thiol groups and a terminal hydroxyl. Those adjacent thiols bind strongly to heavy-metal ions, so the compound works as a chelating antidote that helps the body excrete arsenic, mercury, gold and lead. It is dispensed as an injectable preparation and is also used in the laboratory as a thiol-protecting and reducing agent and as a reagent in analytical chemistry for heavy-metal work. The oily liquid is air- and light-sensitive and is supplied in sealed ampoules or bottles at ≥98% assay.
• Heavy-metal chelation therapy: used as an injectable antidote for arsenic, mercury, gold and lead poisoning.
• Biochemical research: serves as a thiol reagent and reducing agent for enzyme and protein studies.
• Analytical chemistry: applied as a masking and complexing agent in metal determination.
• Antidote stockpiles: held as a reference antidote for chemical-agent and industrial-exposure emergencies.
