Diphenylphosphine
Diphenylphosphine is a secondary aromatic phosphine with two phenyl groups and one P-H bond, supplied as a colourless to pale yellow clear liquid at 98% purity.
It is a versatile organophosphorus building block: the labile hydrogen can be replaced by metals, alkyl groups or a second phosphorus centre, while the two phenyl rings provide σ-donor/π-acceptor character that stabilises low-valent metal centres. These features make it a standard reagent for ligand construction and for introducing a diphenylphosphino group into organic frameworks.
The compound oxidises readily in air and is therefore packed and stored under inert gas, away from light, moisture and oxidising materials.
• Ligand and catalyst synthesis: used to prepare diphosphines, phosphino-amines and phosphino-acids that support palladium, rhodium and ruthenium catalysts.
• Metal-phosphido chemistry: reacts with metal halides and carbonyls to give phosphido-bridged complexes and hydride precursors.
• Organic synthesis: adds a diphenylphosphino group to alkenes, alkynes and aryl halides by hydrophosphination or metal-catalysed coupling.
• Flame retardants and stabilisers: an intermediate for phosphine oxide and phosphonium derivatives used in polymer modification and extraction reagents.
