ethoxydimethylsilane
Chloromethyl dimethyl ethoxysilane (CAS 13508-53-7), also written as (chloromethyl)(ethoxy)dimethylsilane, is a bifunctional organosilicon compound that combines a hydrolytically active ethoxy group with a reactive chloromethyl substituent bonded directly to silicon. It is a colourless liquid of moderate volatility that is flammable, corrosive and moisture sensitive, and is therefore stored under an inert atmosphere at two to eight degrees Celsius and handled with anhydrous techniques. The ethoxysilane end condenses with hydroxyl-bearing surfaces such as glass, silica, quartz and metal oxides to form durable siloxane bonds, while the chloromethyl group provides a reactive site for nucleophilic displacement and further functionalisation. That dual reactivity allows the molecule to act as a molecular bridge between inorganic substrates and organic polymers.
1. Silane coupling agent: improves adhesion between organic resins and inorganic fillers or substrates in composites, coatings, sealants, adhesives, printing inks and electronic encapsulants by forming covalent siloxane linkages and reducing interfacial failure.
2. Surface modification: used to introduce chloromethyl functional groups onto silica, glass, quartz, alumina and metal oxide surfaces, providing anchor points for subsequent grafting of amines, thiols, phosphines, imidazoles and carboxylates.
3. Synthetic intermediate: serves as a starting material for other organofunctional silanes, silicone polymers, silsesquioxanes and surface-bound catalysts, ligands, membranes and chromatographic stationary phases.
4. Handling and storage: corrosive, flammable and moisture sensitive; keep sealed under dry nitrogen or argon at two to eight degrees Celsius, use anhydrous solvents and inert-atmosphere techniques, and avoid all contact with water, alcohols, amines, acids and strong bases to prevent hydrolysis and loss of reactivity.
