Ethyl 2-Nitropropionate
Ethyl 2-nitropropionate is the ethyl ester of 2-nitropropionic acid, supplied as a colourless to pale yellow clear liquid at 98% purity.
The molecule combines an acidic α-hydrogen with a strong electron-withdrawing nitro group, giving it high reactivity in Michael additions, alkylations and condensations, where the nitro group can later be reduced, displaced or converted into a carbonyl equivalent. It is therefore valued as a compact, three-carbon building block for heterocycles and functionalised amines.
The ester is a combustible liquid that should be stored tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from strong bases, oxidants and sources of ignition.
• Heterocycle synthesis: condenses with diamines, amidines and hydrazines to build imidazoles, triazoles, pyrazoles and pyrimidines bearing a methyl substituent.
• Michael addition: acts as a nitroalkane donor for conjugate addition to enones and acrylates, giving highly functionalised nitro esters after decarboxylation.
• Amine and amino acid building blocks: reduction of the nitro group opens a route to 2-aminopropionate derivatives and chiral amine intermediates.
• Agrochemical and pharmaceutical intermediates: used in the construction of herbicidal and pharmaceutical scaffolds where a nitro-activated carbon centre is required.
