Fluorene
Fluorene (CAS: 86-73-7) is a tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbon from coal tar, supplied as white crystalline flakes with a faint violet fluorescence.
The reactive methylene bridge at the 9-position allows easy substitution, making it a valuable building block for resins, pharmaceuticals and optoelectronic materials.
It is used to prepare fluorenone, bisphenol fluorene and polyfluorene-type materials.
It is a stable solid, stored in closed containers away from oxidisers. Typical specifications include assay, melting point and low acenaphthene and dibenzofuran content.
• Optoelectronic materials: raw material for OLED hosts and polyfluorene semiconductors. Fluorene units give high thermal stability and efficient light emission.
• High-performance polymers: precursor for bisphenol fluorene used in heat-resistant polyesters, epoxies and polyimides. These polymers deliver outstanding heat and chemical resistance.
• Pharmaceutical and dye intermediates: starting material for fluorenone and fluorenyl compounds. It also supplies intermediates for antimalarial and other drugs.
• Photoconductors and electronic chemicals: used in hole-transport and photoconductive compounds for imaging and electronic devices.
