Grubbs Catalyst 2nd Generation
Grubbs Catalyst 2nd Generation (CAS: 246047-72-3) is a ruthenium carbene complex bearing an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, developed for olefin metathesis.
Compared with first-generation systems it offers higher activity, better tolerance of functional groups and improved thermal stability, and it is handled in air as a solid with reasonable convenience.
It is used for ring-closing, cross and ring-opening metathesis polymerisation in pharmaceutical, specialty polymer and fine-chemical work.
The catalyst is moderately air-stable as a solid but should be stored cold and under inert gas for long shelf life. Ruthenium content, colour and residual solvent are the usual quality checks, and low-loading use helps keep process costs under control.
• Ring-closing metathesis: forms rings of many sizes, including macrocycles, in drug and natural-product synthesis. It performs well with substituted and electron-poor olefins that challenge first-generation systems.
• Cross metathesis: joins two olefins to create new substituted alkenes with good functional-group tolerance. Compatibility with many functional groups such as esters, amides and alcohols reduces protecting-group steps.
• ROMP polymerisation: initiates ring-opening metathesis polymerisation of strained cyclic olefins for specialty polymers. The resulting polymers can be tuned in molecular weight and are used in coatings, resins and advanced materials.
• Specialty chemicals and fragrances: applied in the production of macrocyclic musks, polymer additives and other high-value compounds that depend on efficient olefin metathesis.
