Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid (CAS 9004-61-9) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan composed of repeating disaccharide units of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, commonly represented as (C₁₄H₂₁NO₁₁)ₙ. It exhibits exceptional viscoelastic properties and water-binding capacity. Molecular weight varies widely by source and grade; the sodium salt (sodium hyaluronate) is also commercially common.
• Cosmetic and dermatological formulations: humectant and moisturizing agent.
• Medical visco-supplementation: joint lubrication in osteoarthritis treatment.
• Ophthalmic surgery: viscoelastic protective agent.
• Biomedical research: biopolymer scaffolds, drug delivery hydrogels and wound healing matrices.
