Hydrazobenzene
Hydrazobenzene (CAS: 122-66-7), or 1,2-diphenylhydrazine, is an aromatic hydrazine supplied as a pale yellow to light tan crystalline powder.
It oxidises readily to azobenzene and rearranges under acid conditions to benzidine, so it must be stored cool and protected from air.
It is mainly an intermediate for pharmaceutical and dye synthesis.
It is air- and acid-sensitive and should be stored cool, dry and protected from light, ideally under inert gas. Typical checks include assay, melting point and low azobenzene content.
• Pharmaceutical intermediate: used in the synthesis of pyrazolidinedione-type compounds. Pharmaceutical routes need tight control of impurity levels.
• Dye and chemical synthesis: precursor to azobenzene and related compounds. Its redox behaviour makes it useful in dye and research chemistry.
• Research reagent: used in redox and rearrangement studies. Careful handling is needed due to its sensitivity.
• Rubber and specialty chemistry: used as an intermediate in rubber chemicals and as a reducing agent in specialised synthesis.
