Lead methanesulfonate
Lead(II) methanesulfonate (CAS 17570-76-2) is a water-soluble lead salt normally supplied as a 50 percent by weight aqueous solution, a clear colourless to slightly yellow liquid with a density noticeably above that of water and no strong odour. Because lead ions are neurotoxic, bioaccumulative and classified as reproductive and developmental toxins, the material is regulated as a hazardous substance and must be handled with strict containment, appropriate personal protective equipment and licensed waste treatment. The methanesulfonate counter-ion is chosen because it is highly soluble, only weakly complexing and much easier to rinse than chloride, fluoroborate or fluosilicate electrolytes, and it introduces no aggressive halide ions into electrochemical and catalytic systems. It is a specialist industrial reagent rather than a general-purpose chemical.
1. Electroplating: used as the lead source in tin-lead alloy plating baths and in the deposition of lead-containing finishes for connectors, printed circuit boards, bearings and corrosion-protection coatings, where sulfate- and halide-free electrolytes improve deposit quality.
2. Organic synthesis and catalysis: a soluble lead(II) source for preparing lead methanesulfonate catalysts and for lead-mediated transformations, acylations and condensation reactions in fine chemical and pharmaceutical manufacture.
3. Analytical and specialty applications: employed in preparing lead calibration standards, in electrochemical, sensor and battery research, and in studies requiring a clean, highly soluble lead electrolyte with controlled ionic strength.
4. Handling and regulatory: highly toxic by ingestion and inhalation with cumulative effects on the nervous system and kidneys; use closed systems with impermeable gloves, eye and respiratory protection, collect all waste for licensed disposal, and comply with local lead-exposure limits and discharge regulations.
