Luminol (CAS: 521-31-3) is a white to pale brown crystalline heterocyclic compound famous for its bright blue chemiluminescence when it is oxidised in alkaline solution. Its light emission is triggered by oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a metal catalyst, which makes it possible to detect very small amounts of metal ions, haemoglobin and oxidising species. This sensitivity underpins its use in forensic blood-detection, clinical assays and analytical method development. The powder is stable under normal storage, has low toxicity, and is normally supplied at 98% purity for laboratory and diagnostic applications.

• Forensic and analytical detection: used to reveal trace blood residues at crime scenes and in laboratory tests.

• Chemiluminescence assays: the key reagent in immunoassays, Western blot detection and oxidant monitoring.

• Metal-ion analysis: applied to detect copper, iron and cobalt traces in environmental and process samples.

• Teaching and research: a classic demonstration and reference compound in photochemistry and luminescence studies.
