Murexide
Murexide, the ammonium salt of purpuric acid, is a purple-red to reddish-brown powder supplied at 95% purity as a classical analytical reagent.
Its colour depends on the metal ions present and on pH: the free indicator is violet, turns yellow-green in acidic media and gives stable, strongly coloured complexes with calcium, copper, nickel and other transition metals. This behaviour underlies its long-standing use in complexometric titrations and in the identification of metal ions.
The dye is light- and moisture-sensitive and should be kept in a tightly closed container, protected from light and stored in a dry place.
• Complexometric titration: a visual indicator for calcium and copper determinations, including the standard assay of calcium in pharmaceutical and food samples.
• Metal-ion identification: gives characteristic colour changes with nickel, cobalt, copper and rare-earth ions, supporting qualitative inorganic analysis.
• Analytical method development: used as a colorimetric reagent and redox indicator in kinetic and spectrophotometric studies.
• Teaching and research laboratories: a classic demonstration dye for chelation, complex formation and acid-base indicator behaviour.
