N-(2-Cyanoethyl)-N-Ethylaniline
N-(2-Cyanoethyl)-N-ethylaniline is a tertiary aromatic amine with an ethyl group and a propionitrile chain attached to the nitrogen, supplied as a colourless to yellow clear liquid at 98% purity.
The propionitrile arm is the reactive feature: under acid or base conditions it cyclises or hydrolyses, converting the simple aniline into fused heterocycles or carboxylic acid derivatives. The N-ethyl group keeps the molecule liquid and oil-soluble, which is why it is handled easily in high-throughput dye and intermediate plants.
The product is sensitive to strong oxidants and prolonged light exposure and should be stored in tightly closed, corrosion-resistant containers.
• Dye manufacture: a coupling component and cyclisation precursor for methine, azine and cyanine-type dyes.
• Heterocycle synthesis: the nitrile chain is used to build quinoline, indole and pyrazolone ring systems via cyclocondensation.
• Agrochemical and pharmaceutical intermediates: serves as an alkylated aniline building block for active-ingredient synthesis.
• Organic base: applied as a tertiary amine in acylation, alkylation and condensation reactions where a non-nucleophilic nitrogen is required.
