N-Ethyl-N-Hydroxyethyl-m-Toluidine
N-Ethyl-N-hydroxyethyl-m-toluidine is a tertiary aromatic amine containing an ethyl group and a hydroxyethyl group, supplied as a colourless to pale yellow clear liquid at 99% purity.
The hydroxyl group can be esterified, etherified or reacted with isocyanates, while the aromatic amine provides a strong electron donor that develops deep colour on oxidative coupling. Because the molecule is a liquid with moderate viscosity and good solubility in both aromatic solvents and water-miscible systems, it is easy to dose in continuous processes.
The product should be stored in closed, light-resistant containers under dry conditions and kept away from strong oxidising agents.
• Colour former intermediates: a standard coupling component in carbonless copy paper and thermal paper leuco dye systems.
• Dye synthesis: used to prepare methine and azine dyes for textiles, leather and inks, where the hydroxyethyl group tunes solubility.
• Polymer modification: the hydroxyl function reacts with isocyanates and anhydrides to give urethane and ester derivatives for coatings.
• Photographic and imaging chemistry: applied as a developing agent intermediate and as an electron donor in redox imaging systems.
