N-Ethyl-N-methyl)ethanamine(CAS 15180-47-9), also named N-ethyl-N-[(triethoxysilyl)methyl]ethanamine or (diethylaminomethyl)triethoxysilane, is a bifunctional organosilicon reagent that combines a tertiary amine and a triethoxysilane group on the same silicon-carbon tether. It is a colourless to pale yellow liquid with a distinctly amine-like odour, is moisture sensitive and hydrolyses on contact with water or humid air, so it is stored under inert gas at reduced temperature and supplied at more than 95 percent purity by gas chromatography. The triethoxysilane end hydrolyses and condenses with hydroxylated surfaces to form durable siloxane bonds, while the pendant diethylamino group provides basic sites for acid-base interaction, metal coordination and catalysis. That combination is valuable wherever an inorganic surface must be made compatible with an organic polymer.
1. Silane coupling agent: used as an adhesion promoter, crosslinking agent and surface modifier in filled polymers, composites, coatings, adhesives, sealants and rubber compounds where basic amine functionality is required for cure or compatibility.
2. Catalyst and curing agent: the tertiary amine accelerates epoxy, polyurethane and silicone cure reactions, and the compound can be immobilised on silica, glass or alumina to create recoverable heterogeneous base catalysts for condensation and esterification chemistry.
3. Surface functionalisation: modifies silica, glass, quartz, aluminium oxide and metal surfaces to introduce basic amino groups for chromatography supports, chemical sensors, separation membranes, catalyst anchoring and bioseparation media.
4. Handling and storage: corrosive and moisture sensitive; keep sealed under dry inert gas at low temperature, use strictly anhydrous solvents, and avoid exposure to water, alcohols, acids, amines and oxidising agents to prevent premature hydrolysis and loss of coupling activity.
