N,N-Dimethylaniline
N,N-Dimethylaniline (CAS: 121-69-7) is a tertiary aromatic amine supplied as a colorless to pale yellow oily liquid that darkens on exposure to air and light. It is a versatile intermediate and accelerator.
It is used to prepare dyes such as crystal violet and malachite green, as well as vanillin, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
In polymer chemistry it serves as a promoter for peroxide-cured unsaturated polyester and acrylic systems, where it speeds up room-temperature curing.
It is toxic and combustible, so it should be stored in sealed containers under nitrogen if possible, away from light and oxidisers. Purity by GC, low aniline and N-methylaniline, and water content are the main specification points.
• Dye intermediate: raw material for triarylmethane and azo dyes. It is a fast, cost-effective promoter at low dosage.
• Curing accelerator: promotes benzoyl peroxide initiation in unsaturated polyester, acrylic and dental resins. Reaction with formaldehyde and aromatic aldehydes gives the leuco bases of key dyes.
• Fine-chemical synthesis: intermediate for vanillin, pharmaceuticals and pesticides. Consistent quality helps keep yields and colour reproducible.
• Pharmaceutical and photochemical use: applied in photoinitiator systems and in the preparation of penicillin-type and other drug intermediates.
