Orthanilic Acid
Orthanilic Acid (CAS: 88-21-1), or 2-aminobenzenesulfonic acid, is an aromatic amino-sulfonic acid used mainly as a diazo component in azo dye synthesis.
It exists as a zwitterion and is a white to grey crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water.
It is also used to make metal-complex dyes, optical brighteners and certain pharmaceutical intermediates.
It is a stable solid, stored dry in closed containers. Typical specifications include assay by titration, moisture, low sulfanilic and metanilic acid content and insoluble matter.
• Azo dye manufacturing: diazotised and coupled to give water-soluble acid and reactive dyes. Water-soluble products dye wool, silk and nylon well.
• Metal-complex dyes: ligand precursor for chromium and cobalt complex dyes. Metal complexes give strong, light-fast shades.
• Specialty intermediates: used for sulfonated additives and brightener production. Purity affects clarity and brightness.
• Pharmaceutical and sulfonamide intermediates: used as a starting material for sulfonamide-type compounds and specialty sulfonated chemicals.
