Oxalyl Chloride
Oxalyl Chloride (CAS: 79-37-8) is a low-molecular-weight diacid chloride supplied as a colourless to pale yellow clear liquid with a sharp, irritating odour.
It is a powerful chlorinating and formylating reagent, widely used to convert carboxylic acids to acid chlorides under mild conditions, for Swern oxidations and for introducing oxalyl or formyl groups into aromatic systems.
Commercial assay is 99% and the product is moisture sensitive and toxic, so it is packed in sealed drums for industrial use.
• Acid chloride formation: converts carboxylic acids to acyl chlorides with volatile by-products only.
• Swern and related oxidations: activates DMSO for mild oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones.
• Pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis: formylation and oxalylation of aromatics and amines.
• Polymer and dye chemistry: preparation of diacid chlorides and colourant intermediates.
