4-(Ethoxyethoxy)styrene (CAS 157057-20-0), also called 1-ethenyl-4-(1-ethoxyethoxy)benzene or 1-(1-ethoxyethoxy)-4-vinylbenzene, is a colourless to pale yellow transparent liquid styrene derivative in which the phenolic hydroxyl of 4-hydroxystyrene has been masked as an acid-labile ethoxyethyl acetal. Commercial material is stabilised with a small amount of tert-butylcatechol to prevent spontaneous polymerisation, and purity is typically 98 percent or higher by gas chromatography. It must be stored cool, dry and away from light and radical initiators. The vinyl group undergoes conventional radical, anionic and controlled radical polymerisation, while the acetal protecting group keeps the monomer soluble and stable and can later be cleaved by mild acid to regenerate the hydrophilic phenol.
1. Photoresist and microelectronics materials: a key monomer for hydroxystyrene-based polymers used in deep-ultraviolet and chemically amplified photoresists, where acid-mediated deprotection creates the solubility switch that defines the latent image during development.
2. Functional polymer synthesis: enables preparation of protected poly(4-hydroxystyrene) and its copolymers for lithography, coatings, membranes, adhesives and imaging materials with tunable polarity, glass transition temperature and dissolution behaviour.
3. Coatings and specialty polymers: imparts controlled polarity, adhesion, dielectric behaviour and compatibility with polar additives to copolymers used as functional binders, dispersion aids and photoresist resins.
4. Handling and storage: flammable and prone to spontaneous polymerisation; store refrigerated under inert gas with inhibitor present, keep away from acids, oxidisers, heat and light, and deprotect the acetal only under controlled acidic conditions with adequate ventilation.
