Palladium(II) sulfate (CAS 13566-03-5) is an inorganic palladium salt described as a hygroscopic red-brown solid that is normally supplied and handled as the dihydrate and is moderately soluble in water and dilute acid. As a platinum-group metal compound it is expensive and tightly traded, so industrial users recover and recycle palladium from spent solutions rather than discarding them, and laboratory grades are typically offered at 98 percent purity or higher. The sulfate counter-ion is thermally robust and compatible with strongly acidic and oxidising media, which distinguishes palladium sulfate from palladium chloride or acetate in certain catalytic and electrolytic systems. Its primary technical value is as a concentrated, precisely defined source of palladium(II) ions that can be reduced, precipitated or ion-exchanged to generate catalytically active species.

1. Catalyst precursor: used to prepare supported and homogeneous palladium catalysts for hydrogenation, carbonylation, cross-coupling, oxidation and Wacker-type reactions in fine chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and as a screening source of well-defined palladium loadings.
2. Electroplating and surface finishing: employed in palladium and palladium alloy plating baths and in the deposition of thin catalytic palladium layers on electrodes, membranes, connectors and other electronic components, where sulfate electrolytes avoid aggressive halide residues.
3. Materials and analytical chemistry: a defined palladium source for synthesising other palladium compounds, for catalyst and sensor research and for preparing analytical standards used in trace metal determination and materials characterisation.
4. Handling and regulatory: treat as a hazardous palladium-containing material; avoid dust inhalation and skin contact, wear suitable protective equipment, store sealed in a dry place, and comply with precious-metal recovery procedures and heavy-metal discharge regulations.
