Platinum(IV) Oxide
Platinum(IV) Oxide (CAS: 1314-15-4), best known as Adams’ catalyst, is a brown to black platinum oxide powder with a high platinum content and excellent hydrogenation activity. Unlike platinum black it stores and handles more conveniently, and it forms the active hydrogenation catalyst in situ when reduced by hydrogen during a reaction. This makes it a standard choice for hydrogenation of aromatic rings, carbonyls, nitro compounds and olefins under mild conditions, as well as for laboratory and small-scale production work. It is insoluble in water and common solvents, stable in air, and supplied at ≥99% purity.
• Hydrogenation catalysis: Adams’ catalyst for reducing aromatics, nitro groups, carbonyls and unsaturated bonds.
• Laboratory synthesis: a convenient catalyst for hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis at bench and pilot scale.
• Catalyst preparation: a platinum precursor for supported Pt catalysts and bimetallic systems.
• Electrochemistry and materials: used in electrode studies and in the preparation of platinum-containing functional materials.
