Polyisobutylene
Polyisobutylene (CAS 9003-27-4) is a synthetic homopolymer of isobutylene, also known as PIB. The repeat unit is commonly written (C₄H₈)ₙ. Commercial forms range from tacky elastomeric materials to clear viscous liquids, with physical form and performance varying with viscosity. It is hydrophobic, flexible and water-resistant.
• Lubricant and grease formulations: viscosity and film-forming modifier, adjusting consistency and imparting tack or lubricity.
• Fuel-additive formulations: polymeric component or precursor in performance additive systems.
• Adhesives and sealants: tack, flexibility and water resistance.
• Packaging-related materials and emulsifier applications, with grade choice depending on processing and end-use requirements.
