Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)
Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (CAS 25704-18-1) is the water-soluble sodium salt of polystyrenesulfonic acid, a linear anionic polyelectrolyte whose chains carry a sulfonate group on every aromatic ring. It is supplied as a white to off-white powder or as an aqueous solution, with weight-average molecular weights ranging from a few thousand to over one million, and narrow-polydispersity grades are available for analytical work; typical commercial grades include one with an average molecular weight of about one million and a lower-viscosity 20 percent aqueous solution. The high charge density provides exceptional water solubility, strong ionic-strength response and the ability to bind cations and charged surfaces, while the aromatic backbone gives thermal stability and good film-forming character. Molecular weight, concentration and counter-ion form can be tailored to the intended function.
1. Dispersant and rheology modifier: used as a dispersant for metal oxides and sulfates, a suspending agent for pigments, ceramics and mineral slurries, and a superplasticiser in cement, concrete and drilling-fluid formulations.
2. Ion exchange and membranes: a precursor to cationic ion-exchange resins and a key component of proton-conducting membranes for fuel cells, electrolysers and other electrochemical devices, where the sulfonate groups provide proton transport.
3. Analytical and biomedical tools: employed as a polyelectrolyte titration standard for charge-density measurement, as a coating that prevents non-specific protein adsorption, and as a template or stabiliser in nanoparticle synthesis and drug-delivery research.
4. Handling and storage: hygroscopic but stable; store in a tightly closed container in a dry place. It is non-flammable and of low acute toxicity but is not readily biodegradable, so avoid release to the aquatic environment and dispose of in accordance with local regulations.
