(R)-BINAP
(R)-BINAP is the enantiopure (R)-enantiomer of 2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1′-binaphthyl, supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder at 98% purity.
The molecule combines the axial chirality of its binaphthyl backbone with two diphenylphosphino donor groups, which gives it strong chelating ability and high stereodiscrimination once coordinated to palladium, ruthenium, rhodium or iridium. This combination has made it one of the benchmark ligands for asymmetric homogeneous catalysis in both research and industrial process chemistry.
The product is air-sensitive and is normally packed under nitrogen, then stored cool, dry and protected from light and oxidising agents.
• Asymmetric hydrogenation: combined with ruthenium or rhodium precursors it delivers highly enantioselective hydrogenation of functionalised alkenes, ketones and imines, including Noyori-type systems used for chiral alcohols and amino acid derivatives.
• Asymmetric cross-coupling and allylic substitution: palladium-BINAP complexes catalyse enantioselective allylic alkylation, amination and arylation used to build chiral building blocks.
• Asymmetric isomerisation: rhodium-BINAP systems convert allylic amines into chiral enamines, a key step in the industrial synthesis of menthol and related fragrance molecules.
• Process chemistry: applied as the ligand of choice in route scouting and multi-kilogram manufacture of pharmaceutical intermediates, where high enantiomeric excess and low catalyst loading are required.
